(October 10, 2019) – For 59 years, the Children’s Hospital Book Market has made miracles happen.
Today, after two successful events in April and September, they announced a total fundraising of $468,000.00 for the year. But the impact is far greater than anyone purchasing a 25 cent book could ever imagine.
With this donation to the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, the hospital will be able to:
- Replace 70 old TVs in the Children’s Hospital-HSC Winnipeg patient’s rooms
- Buy new books for the Book Corner and Family Information libraries
- Fund book bags for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- Purchase updated DVDs for the Book Corner Library
- Supply grief package supplies for patients and families
- Allow the purchase for trauma kits for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- Provide portable DVD players
- Continue to provide financial support for CHTV (the Children’s Hospital non-commercialized, closed-circuit television channel for patients) and the libraries within the hospital
“If it wasn’t for our family of volunteers, and the caring community the success of Book Market would not be possible”, states Sheila Hirt, Chair, Children’s Hospital Book Market. “We are very honoured to be presenting this donation today, knowing it will make an impact for years to come.”
“It truly takes a village to make anything possible for our kids,” states Stefano Grande, President & CEO, Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. “With an assembly of over 400 passionate and dedicated volunteers, this sale continues to rally the community together to encourage the love of reading while supporting their hospital at the same time. Our thanks to the volunteers, St. Vital Centre, Dufresne Furniture and Appliances, Gardewine, Firefighters Burn Fund Inc., City Press and Toromont Cat, and so many more sponsors for helping to keep the longevity of this event a continued success.”
The Children’s Hospital Book Market was established in 1961 and is the longest-running fundraiser in support of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. The concept of Book Market is simple. Members of the community drop off used books at the City of Winnipeg Fire Halls or Dufresne Furniture and Appliances. Volunteers pick them up, sort, price, and pack them ready for the next sale. Since its inception, Book Market has raised over $9 million in support of Child Health in Manitoba. The next sale is April 23rd-25th, 2020, at St. Vital Centre. Next year Book Market will celebrate 60 years of fundraising.
