September 2019
I heard the best quote when I started working here. “Today’s Research = Tomorrow’s Treatments + Cures”.
When we look back on many different health-related issues like RH factor, Polio, Small Pox, etc…all have been solved because of talented researchers. And some of those researchers are literally in our back yard!
Did you know Winnipeg is the home of the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba – the first research facility dedicated exclusively to pediatric research in the Prairie Provinces?
I invite you to learn more about your backyard:
The Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (or CHRIM as most of us call it here) is the research division of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. As you walk down the colourful and inviting halls amazing things are happening. At the Institute, more than 270 world-class pediatric medical researchers, technical staff, students, and support staff are involved in nearly $20 million of research and clinical trial activity each year.
There are scientists like Dr. Cheryl Rockman-Greenberg, who is the Canadian leader in the field of often fatal bone disease. She has made a groundbreaking contribution to the treatment of this rare and debilitating disease. Dr. Meghan Azad is getting world-wide recognition for her research, finding out that milk bacteria are different in mothers who pump their milk. Dr. Jon McGavock’s team is getting to the heart of the diabetes epidemic in the indigenous population while educating the next generation to help prepare them for their potential future.

Next month, CHRIM will be celebrating their 15th Annual Child Health Research Day. What started as a local get-together has now launched into a global movement bringing talent from around the world to meet, learn from each other and potentially collaborate.
During this conference, there will once again be hosting a FREE public event that I would like to invite you to attend personally. On October 23rd at the RBC Convention Centre, CHRIM will be welcoming internationally renowned public speaker, author, and professor, Timothy Caulfield.
With so many different health messages being brought into this world, Professor Caulfield is known to debunk myths and assumptions about innovation in the health sector — from research on stem cells to diets to alternative medicine — for the benefit of the public and decision-makers. This is an event not to miss.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the presentation starting at 7:00 p.m. Register today as spots are limited and you’re getting the first invite!
If you have any questions about CHRIM, please reach out to me. I’d be happy to set up a tour for you to see the fantastic work happening right here in Manitoba.
Let’s be proud of what’s in our back yard.
For the Kids,
Stefano Grande
