Expert care inspires family’s generosity

A new Canadian family is making a difference in honour of the warm welcome they’ve felt in Manitoba and the expert care they received at HSC Children’s Hospital.

“In my heart, I felt I should do something. God inspired me to do it,” says generous donor Lovemeet Singh.

When Lovemeet moved his family from the Punjab state in India to Winnipeg in 2018, he carried one hope in his heart: a brighter future for his kids.

“I came for my children,” he says. “They are my world and I love them a lot. For their future, I could live anywhere.”

First Lovemeet moved on his own and eight months later his wife Navjot and kids Yashwinder and Manreet joined him. Lovemeet worked various jobs until he was able to open his own business, BSA Cabinetry.

In early 2026, when Yashwinder needed quick medical support, the family was grateful to have access to expert care at HSC Children’s. Twice overnight Yashwinder was suddenly in pain and throwing up and twice his family took him to Children’s Hospital Emergency Department where health care teams carefully ran tests and cared for him until he improved.

On their second visit, as the family was leaving, Lovemeet noticed a small sign about donating to support the hospital and felt a strong pull to give back. After returning home he went online and made a generous contribution of $10,000 to the Children’s Hospital Emergency Department.

“I’m able to donate because of my business success. That’s very special and meaningful,” says Lovemeet.

For Lovemeet, who is Sikh, giving is both a religious practice and personal responsibility. He says that in Sikh tradition people often give anonymously but he believes it’s also important for newcomers to share their contributions openly, so others know they are helping build the country they now call home.

He is deeply thankful to Canada and to the people who welcomed his family.

“This country accepted us, so I wanted to give something back,” says Lovemeet. “If there is heaven on earth, it’s right here in Canada.”

Now 14-year-old Yashwinder is taking supplements to support his health and going for further testing. He is a curious, mechanically gifted teenager, so much so that he once turned an old lawnmower into a go‑kart.

When Yashwinder feels symptoms coming on again, he asks to go to HSC Children’s.

“Anytime he feels sick, he says, ‘Take me to the hospital. I feel safe there,’” says Lovemeet. “That means everything to me.”

Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba is deeply grateful to donors like Lovemeet and his family, who find it in their heart to give what they can to help provide all kids and families in our province with the best care possible.
