Foundation can’t accept toys due to COVID-19

Winnipeg, MB (November 25, 2020) – COVID-19 has forced the Children’s Hospital Foundation to make a big change this holiday season – donations can’t be accepted in person. Every year, generous Manitobans drop off gifts and donations to make life a little brighter for kids in hospital. Current safety restrictions at HSC Winnipeg Children’s Hospital, however, mean visitors can’t come to the hospital.

Instead, Children’s Hospital Foundation is encouraging anyone who would like to give the gift of play to make a monetary donation online at goodbear.ca This will allow staff on the Child Life team to purchase gifts and comfort items and organize activities for this very special season.

These health care providers are expert in helping kids and their families cope with the uncertainty of being sick and in hospital, and understand children’s developmental needs, including for play and distraction. And since they work closely with the kids every day, they choose gifts that are appropriate for each child.

“We know how important celebration, purposeful activity and the anticipation of the holiday season are to patients and families in Children’s Hospital,” says Nicole Hase-Wilson, clinical service lead, Child Life. “We will continue to look for innovative ways to bring safe, joyful, meaningful experiences to patients and their families.”

“The Children’s Hospital Foundation is so thankful Manitobans have such big hearts and continue to support sick kids in the community, especially as we all fight to stop the spread of COVID-19,” said Stefano Grande, president and CEO. “This year has been an extremely difficult one for many people, including children and their families in hospital. There are emergencies, traumas, and pre-existing conditions – the global pandemic does not change any of that. Donors can help bring hope and comfort to kids during this time.”
