Sobey’s Makes Big Impact On Children’s Hospital Research

Sobey’s Inc. surprised the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba today with a donation to help three research programs that are in need of funding. The generous $20,000 donation will support:

1) $5000 for The Aboriginal Youth Mentorship Program: Type 2 diabetes is almost at an epidemic level in Canada, and the disease is approximately 25% more prevalent in Manitoba than in other province. This research program aims to prevent and reduce type 2 diabetes in children through an after-school initiative that provides physical activity, healthy snacks, and games for elementary school children.

2) $5500 for Formula Supplements Research: Dr. Bill Diehl-Jones conducts research at the Foundation owned and operated Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba to determine the correct fortifiers to include in nutritional formula for newborns under the age of 28 weeks. Funding will support Dr. Diehl-Jones’ research helping his team become one step closer.

3) $10,000 for Dental Health: Alarmingly, 3500 children/year undergo oral surgery in the Children’s Hospital, with a wait-list of an additional 670 children. Dr. Robert Schroth conducts research, community outreach and clinical practice with respect to child oral health and education. Support from Sobey’s will help two of the programs promoting early childhood oral health to newcomers and First Nation communities.

“As a vital service in Manitoba, the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba is there for our customers and employees facing injury or illness – and most importantly, they are there for the thousands of kids at the heart of their mission.  Through the Pumpkins for Patients campaign and the $1 donation for each pumpkin sold, we are proud to play a small part in providing our neighbours hope for health and happiness,” shared Renée Hopfner, Community Investment Director, Sobeys Inc.

Research is the key to saving lives, making sick children well again, and preventing kids from getting sick in the first place,” states Dawna Wallace, Major Gift Officer, Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. “Sobeys’ generous donation will support programs that educate children and their families about healthy lifestyles and provide the ability for doctors and researchers to concretely model healthy food selection.   The Sobeys donation will also help newborn babies start on the right foot by supporting research into the best fortifiers to include in nutritional formula.”
