Community Partner: Rodren Drilling

Rodren Drilling is committed to giving back to the community as a proud supporter of The Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. Through the Metres for Kids program Rodren Drilling donates 50 cents for every metre drilled. The more they drill, the more they donate, with a goal of raising one million dollars.

For Rod Cyr, owner of Rodren Drilling, the gift is in the giving.

“My proudest moment was the first time I gave the Children’s Hospital a cheque. I had tears in my eyes,” remembers Rod. “It’s a really good feeling. 50 cents a metre may not sound like a lot, but when you drill 100,000 or 200,000 metres it really adds up. We’re working on one contract right now that is 30,000 metres, so that’s $15,000 for Children’s Hospital by mid-summer.”

This extraordinary program has already made a huge impact on the lives of sick kids in Manitoba.

“Metres for Kids is an incredibly unique fundraising campaign,” says Gary Rozak, Program Director, Children’s Hospital Foundation. “It’s the brain-child and passion of Rod Cyr to use advanced diamond drilling exploration to raise money. With donations from Rodren Drilling as well as suppliers and vendors the campaign has raised $350,000 and climbing.”

The desire to help sick kids stems from personal experience.

“Back in 1959 I was a kid in Flin Flon when I contracted polio,” says Rod. “I was 5 years old and they flew me to Winnipeg and put me in an iron lung at King George Hospital. When I started to get better they moved me to Children’s Hospital where I stayed for 3 or 4 months. To this day I can remember being there, and it’s always going to be a special place for me.”

That passion born out of personal experience is deeply appreciated.

“Rod and his family not only support the hospital through Metres for Kids but also attend major hospital events like the Golf Tournament and Gala where they help to purchase life-saving equipment,” says Rozak. “Rod cares deeply for the kids in hospital. He is tremendously passionate about funds being used to buy the best equipment possible so kids don’t spend as much time away from home. The Foundation can’t reach its goals without caring donors like Rod Cyr and Rodren Drilling.”

Rodren Drilling sees no end in sight for their generous support.

“Everyone that works here is proud of what we’re doing,” says Rod. “There isn’t anybody I know of that hasn’t been touched by the Children’s Hospital. For that reason I will continue to support them. They do amazing work, and are wonderful people.”

Bear hugs to Rod Cyr and the team at Rodren Drilling for helping sick kids in Manitoba feel better!
