Bringing Comfort to Families
Thanks to your donations, a unique and extraordinary program is helping ease the burden for families with sick kids in Children’s Hospital.
The Family Comfort Fund is designed to help families cope with both the day to day and unexpected costs of having a sick and injured child. Administered through the Social Work department, it is up to front-line social workers to decide when it is appropriate to provide assistance through the fund.
Thanks to this remarkable initiative, Social Workers have direct access to resources that assist patients and families in financial crisis. This helps decrease the stress of having a sick child and increases efficiency thus freeing up time to provide more services to more families.
Financial considerations are given for expenses such as; transportation in the form of bus tickets, taxi fare, gas or parking; accommodation at a facility close to the hospital; phone cards, grocery cards, meal tickets, hygiene products, clothes, baby start up needs and medication.
When a Social Worker identifies a need, support is provided in the form of goods or vouchers, as opposed to cash.
Having existed for only one year, the Family Comfort Fund has already had tremendous positive impact.
“We have been truly blown away by the difference this fund has made within one year,” says Regan Spencer BA, BSW, MSW, RSW, Director of Social Work, HSC. “Because of this fund, our Social Work team can provide immediate assistance in situations where there are genuine needs and no other resources available. They can respond quickly to a patient and their family’s needs. This help serves to ease the stress of having a child in hospital. A big thank you to the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba donors for their incredible support.”
The most commonly requested items include parking transponders for extended stays, and parking passes for shorter admissions. Meal vouchers are often required for families from northern communities who need time to access funds. Phone cards help low-income families from outside Winnipeg update family and friends on their child’s condition or connect with other children that remain at home. Formula, diapers, monitoring devices, and specialized feeding bottles are a few of the supplies purchased by the Family Comfort Fund for patients and their families.
The Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba maintains the Family Comfort Fund through the support of private donations, corporate sponsors and other fundraising efforts.
This generous gift provides welcome relief for families during their most difficult days.
“Our little son was fighting for his life in the NICU for many weeks,” says an anonymous beneficiary of the Family Comfort Fund. “To be able to focus on him, and not have to worry about how we are going to pay for parking, or to find a spot blocks away – knowing we have to return to our car in two hours – is amazing. Thank you.”
Thanks to your generous donations the Family Comfort Fund allows sick kids and their families to focus on the only thing that really matters…getting better.
